ACRRM Training Program Structure
Hospital Terms
The first year of GP training takes place in a hospital based setting. Junior doctors can apply to the GP training program as an intern and undertake their second year (RMO1) as part of the GP training. Doctors applying later than their Intern year may be eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) and reduce their GP training time. GP Registrars are responsible for arranging their own hospital placements.
GP Synergy recommends all GP Registrars still doing their hospital year to use their time to understand systems and make contacts that will help them during their subsequent careers as GPs. This can be explored further at GP Synergy workshops held for GP Registrars in their hospital term during the year.
Mandatory rotations
During the intern and the first post-intern year of hospital training (or subsequently) the following rotations are mandatory. Please note, these rotations do NOT have to be completed before applying to GP training but must be completed before you move into a GP term:
- General medicine or a rotation that offers broad medical experience - such as geriatric medicine
- General surgery or a term that covers the principles of basic surgical care
- Accident and Emergency
- Paediatrics
