2009 Academic General Practice Posts
The opportunity exists for interested Registrars to experience
an academic general practice post during their training
program. Funding is provided by GPET to enable registrars
to complete 6 months of full-time equivalent academic general
practice. In the past, many Registrars have chosen to complete
this half-time, while working half-time in clinical practice,
but this is flexible.
To be eligible for an Academic GP Post, GP Registrars must
have completed their Basic General Practice placement. An
Academic GP Post may be undertaken as either a Special Skills
placement or an Advanced Academic GP Post (i.e. as part
of a 4th Training year).
Applications for an academic post are made to GPET, who
provide the funding for the posts, via GP Synergy, to the
university. Applications are competitive and registrars
will be more likely to be successful if they demonstrate
interest in and preparation towards a particular research
topic. The universities may be a source of support in this
preparation process.
The University of Sydney, Centre for Developmental
Disability Studies, Ryde Rehabilitation Clinic*
This post, under the supervision of Dr Seeta Durvasula
(Lecturer in Developmental Disabilities, Faculty of Medicine,
University of Sydney) would provide the opportunity to combine
academic research and clinical exposure as part of the Centre's
clinical team. This is a unique opportunity to address the
many challenges that are faced by patients with multiple
complex and chronic conditions. It also provides a multidisciplinary
approach and excellent exposure to care planning.
* This post is regarded as serving an Area of Medical Service
Need (AMSN). This would fulfil AMSN point requirements in
the event that the Registrar is or were to become eligible
for a rural exemption. Applications will be evaluated on
appropriateness and merit.
The University of Sydney, Academic GP Unit,
Hornsby
As part of the Hornsby Academic GP Unit, you will work
under the supervision of Dr Simon Willcock and Dr Narelle
Shadbolt. The Unit has a number of research interest areas
and is well resourced to support academic registrars who
are keen to develop skills in teaching, educational program
design and research skills in primary care.
The University of Sydney, Discipline of
General Practice, Balmain
Working with Professor Michael Kidd, Head of the Discipline,
this post provides a supported environment for the new researcher.
Seminars with experienced staff are held on a regular basis
covering areas such as qualitative and quantitative research
methods, questionnaire design and writing for publications.
The University of NSW GP Unit, Fairfield
Hospital
The GP Unit is affiliated with the School of Public Health
& Community Medicine, UNSW and the newly established
UNSW Research Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity.
It has a research focus on chronic disease management, integration
of health systems in primary care and improving preventive
care in general practice. Staff contributes to teaching
in various stages of the undergraduate medical course at
UNSW. The unit also provides a clinical general practice
service and there is the opportunity for full-time academic
registrars to complete their clinical requirements in the
position.
