The diversity of general practice is reflected in just how many additional courses (external to SIGPET) GP Registrars may find useful. The following list is by no means comprehensive, but may be of particular interest to registrars currently in hospital terms (and so with access to study leave). Short Course in HIV Medicine The Australian Society for HIV medicine (ASHM) Short Course in HIV Medicine gives medical practitioners comprehensive training in the science of HIV, current pharmacology, monitoring and treatment, as well as the complicating factors surrounding HIV management. Completion of the full 8-module course and its associated assessment enables GPs to apply for the right to prescribe s100 drugs for HIV in NSW and ACT Runs 3 times per year in Sydney The course is free for all doctors registered in NSW and ACT. The Diploma in Child Health - Westmead The Diploma is awarded jointly by the Coppleson Committee for Continuing
Medical Education of the USyd and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children.
It is not registrable with the NSW Medical Board but may be displayed
like other postgraduate qualifications. The course is available in local
and distance format. The local course consists of lectures at the Children’s
Hospital at Westmead, small group sessions, community visits and the
Paediatric Postgraduate Weekend for GPs. The DCH by distance education
is set up for small group learning with paediatrician support. There
is also capacity support a limited number of candidates who practice
in remote areas who may not be part of a group. Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) Run by the Australasian College of surgeons, EMST is a 2.5 day course
in the management of injury victims in the first 1-2 hours following
injury. It is designed for all doctors who are involved in the early
treatment of serious injuries in urban or rural areas, whether or not
sophisticated emergency facilities are available. The workshop comprises
lectures, practical skills stations, and MCQ and practical skills assessment. Diploma of Paediatrics, Sydney Children’s Hospital/UNSW 1 year postgraduate diploma in paediatrics. GP’s with at least
6 months of clinical paediatric experience eligible to apply. Consists
of 3 hours of lectures per week at Sydney Children’s Hospital,
Randwick. Diploma in Child Health - University of Adelaide One year postgraduate course, registrable by the Medical Board of South
Australia as a postgraduate qualification DCH (SA).The objectives are
to provide a goal-directed learning program in a wide range of aspects
of child health for trainee medical officers and other medical graduates
whose practice may involve children's health. MENTAL HEALTH The Black Dog Institute Education and training programs to GPs throughout NSW that focus on
the identification, treatment and management of depression and Bipolar
Disorder in the general population. NSW Institute of Psychiatry Mental Health Courses for GPs & GP Registrars The NSW Institute of Psychiatry offers postgraduate units of study
and degree courses designed for General Practitioners, GP Registrars
and other medical practitioners who wish to further their knowledge,
skills and understanding in the assessment and management of mental
health problems. (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master)Scholarships
are available. |
