The SIGPET region takes in some of the most socio-economically and culturally diverse sections of Sydney, including the inner city. Practices are correspondingly diverse, challenging the assumption that urban General Practice is homogeneous. There are opportunities for formal and informal exposure to:

  • Sexual health
  • HIV medicine
  • Counselling
  • Shared care programs - antenatal care, mental health (our region includes the highest proportion of GPs involved in the Federal Government's Better Outcomes in Mental Health initiative), diabetes, macro-vascular risk management
  • Aboriginal Health - the Aboriginal Medical Service at Redfern is a teaching practice in the region

When placing our registrars in practices, we take into account their training interests, linguistic and cultural knowledge, family circumstances and travel constraints.

We have strong links with the Medical Faculties of the University of Sydney and the University of NSW and with the major teaching hospitals and Divisions of General Practice in the region.

In addition to training GP registrars, we also offer continuing medical education to accredited GPs. For example, we run a Clinical Teacher Training Workshop which is accredited as part of the Masters Degree in Medical Education delivered by the University of Sydney's Office of Teaching and Learning in Medicine. We also work with the Divisions of General Practice in our area to develop training packages in areas of special need, such as Mental Health, Aged Care and Adolescent Health.

We have recently initiated a six month program, supporting experienced GPs who are returning to the workforce after a period of absence.
